Heinrich Focke was born in Bremen, Germany or Deutschland in German on October 8 1890. Focke is famous mainly for his invention of the helicopter or "Hubschrauber" in German. In 1909 Focke built his first glider, then a year later his first motorized vehicle called the Kolthoff-Focke A III. After many experiments with the A series, he joined forces with a veteran test pilot named Georg Wulf who helped Focke along with his creations. They continued on with their experiments and creations through World War I until Heinrich Focke co-founded the company Focke-Wulf which helped the Luftwaffe in the future World War II. Focke and Wulf worked together until a few years before the outbreak of World War II when Focke left his company to found another one, Focke Achgelis with co-founder Gerd Achgelis, they focused mainly on specializing with helicopters. In 1951 he left his home country of Germany and moved to Brazil, in Brazil he worked with the Brazilian General Command for Aerospace Technology or CTA for short. The Beija Flor was one of the first helicopters which he created in Brazil; Beija Flor was a two-seater helicopter with twin blades on the sides. This helicopter made its first test flight on January 1st 1959. After moving back to Bremen, Focke dies there on February 25 1979.
The helicopter is a flying machine that has a vertical takeoff unlike the airplane or "Flugzeug" in German. Helicopters have blades that move it upwards at take-off. There are a series of motions that the helicopter takes to take off. There are forward and reverse motions that help propel the helicopter in the air. The average speed of a modern helicopter is about 175 miles per hour however, Heinrich Fockes helicopter was MUCH slower.
Heinrich Focke's invention of the helicopter was revolutionary in his time. It advanced technology very rapidly back when he was alive. It helped the military, transportation and many other things. Without him, our modern military would be weaker and our transportation, not as advanced, his invention was very important.
If Heinrich Focke was still alive I would ask him three questions.
1. What was the most difficult challenge you came across while inventing?
2.How long did it take to complete the helicopter?
3.What inspired you to invent the helicopter?
